Biography

Kayla is a former Book Lab Research Assistant and is a Ph.D. candidate specializing in the study of medieval illuminated manuscripts. Her dissertation, "Devotion and Difficulty: The Performance of the Breviary of Saint-Sépulcre," is a study of the devotional provocation of profane marginalia in late-medieval liturgical books performed through analysis of signs of use such as rubbed images and dirty margins. Kayla is interested in medieval and modern reading practices; medieval manuscripts' digitization and digital humanities; and text/image relationships in illustrated books. Her primary research interest is the materiality of the book. As a result, her research and teaching emphasize the value of experimentation and hands-on experience and her work engages illustrated books of all kinds.
